There’s something truly comforting about the smell of freshly baked goods wafting through the house. And when those baked goods happen to be Curried Sausage Rolls, well, you know you’re in for a treat.
If you’re a fan of classic comfort foods with a twist, you will adore these Curried Sausage Rolls.
To make these delicious treats, you’ll need some basic ingredients that you can easily find at your local grocery store. Start by gathering some high-quality sausage meat, preferably with a bit of spice already in it to complement the curry flavor. You’ll also need some puff pastry, which you can make from scratch or buy pre-made for convenience.
Sausagemeat – For a leaner option, you can use chicken or turkey sausage meat.
Mango Chutney – You can use store-bought mango chutney or make your own for a homemade touch.
Curry Powder – Curry powder is the star of the show, infusing the filling with its aromatic blend of spices. Adjust the amount according to your preference for spiciness.
Ginger Purée – You can substitute with ground ginger if fresh ginger is not available.
Garlic – Adjust the amount of garlic according to your preference.
Nigella Seeds – Nigella seeds, also known as black cumin or kalonji, are small black seeds with a slightly bitter and peppery flavor.
Puff Pastry – Choose a high-quality puff pastry for the best results, or you can even make your own.
To prepare Curried Sausage Rolls, start by preheating your oven to 200°C (180°C fan).
In a food processor, blitz together the sausagemeat, mango chutney, curry powder, ginger purée, crushed garlic, and water until well-combined. If you don’t have a food processor, fear not! Simply combine these ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly with your hands until evenly incorporated.
Next, unroll the puff pastry on a clean board and cut it in half lengthways, creating two long strips of pastry. Divide the sausage mixture into two portions and spread each portion along the length of each pastry strip, leaving about a 1cm border around the edges for sealing.
Now, brush the beaten egg around the edges of the pastry strips and tightly roll the pastry around the sausagemeat filling. Ensure the seam side is facing down to keep the rolls secure during baking. Then, brush the top of each roll with more beaten egg and sprinkle over the nigella seeds.
Using a serrated knife, carefully cut each roll into 10 equally-sized pieces, and arrange them on a lined baking sheet. Pop them into the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is beautifully puffed and golden brown, and the sausage filling is cooked through.
Once baked to perfection, remove the Curried Sausage Rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
